You know the feeling. The plane landed two hours ago, the city is in broad daylight, and your body is still somewhere over the Atlantic. A stiff neck from sleeping upright. Swollen hands and feet. A tiredness unlike any other, because it has nothing to do with effort.

The Jetlag Ritual came out of a simple observation. The travellers who push open our door at 8 Villa de Saxe don't need a sports massage. They need to come back down. To feel their hands and feet again. And, more often than not, to stay awake until evening so that they fall in step with Paris time.

Three stages, one hour

The ritual always unfolds in the same order, because each stage prepares the next.

  • The hammam30 minutes, included in the ritual The damp heat does its work before anyone lays a hand on you: it loosens muscles stiffened by hours of sitting still, and gives back to the skin what the dry cabin air took from it.
  • The showerAs long as you need A threshold, simply. You rinse, you breathe out, you genuinely leave the journey behind.
  • The head, hand and foot massage1 hour or 1 hour 30 — this is the duration the treatment is named for The heart of the ritual. Slow, firm work, concentrated on the three areas a long flight treats worst.

The feet: the first part of you that comes back.

Why the head, the hands and the feet

The choice is not arbitrary. It is the extremities that suffer on a long-haul flight: feet and hands, held low and motionless for hours; the scalp and neck, tensed by the seated position, the noise and the screen.

They are also the areas richest in nerve endings. Careful work there produces a particularly clear sense of release — something reflexology has long understood, and which our therapists draw on every day.

Let us be straightforward about it: a massage does not reset a body clock. Daylight, meals and patience do that, and little else. What the ritual offers is something different, and it is already a great deal: a loosened body, nervous tension falling away, and an evening you can get through without collapsing.

When to come

Our advice fits in one line: the day you arrive, in the late afternoon. Early enough to walk back out into the last of the daylight, late enough that all you have left is a light dinner and one night to get through.

Equally, if you fly home after a demanding week, the ritual works just as well the evening before departure. A good number of our visiting guests make it their last stop in Paris.

We are a short walk from Les Invalides, on a quiet street in the 7th arrondissement: you can finish the treatment without stepping straight back into the noise.
